Tinkerbell - Animated Path Stroking W.I.P.
« on: December 07, 2009, 11:18:04 AM »
You may recall my Animated Path Stroking tutorial (Click Me!).  Well, it was fun to do, but very difficult and time consuming.

I'm working on a script that cuts down on the time and effort.  It's not the most eloquent of solutions from a programming standpoint, but the simple test below took 20 minutes to create, with most of the work involving creating the paths.  Once those were done, the script was run multiple times and it took care of the rest.  There's some glitches in the script (i.e. not closing the paths), but that's something I'm sure I can fix.  I know it's simple looking, but it's very promising!  I'll post more later and the script too.

And what's really cool is it's possible to have a huge number of frames and keep the file size down too.  This on is less than 30kB with 118 frames.

I'd rate you as an upper-middle-lower-mod with pro-novice-inter tendencies.....and a twist of lime!  Of course, my rating scale is completely objectively subjective, but ALWAYS consistently inconsistent.

Here's what happens when you set up the script to run on an existing animation.  It's very easy to do....just pick the frame you want to start with, tell the script how many frames to animate the path and it does the rest (adds it to all existing frames).  I know it's not pretty, but testing often isn't! haha

I see lots of possibilities with this script....animated masks, swiping effects, etc.   Right now it's still in an infant stage, but I never thought I'd even get this far, so I'm elated!  Now that I've got the basics, I'm going back to the drawing board to see if I can make it more functional.  I'll certainly keep everyone posted as I progress.  And, if I never get past this stage, I'll post what I've got and someone much more talented than I can take it to the next step.

Well, no more Tinkerbell updates, but I'm excited to share some new images about how the script is developing.  I'm now able to use gradients and animated brushes and this looks to be very promising.  Here's a couple of sample images:

Animated Brush using a gradient

Calligraphy Brush with a gradient

Animated Brush used normally

I wish GIMP would allow you to program in the use of "Emulating Brush Dynamics", but I have either overlooked that possibility or it's just not available.  At any rate, I'm pleased with the progress and hope to have a script to share with you soon.

now if we could just rotate, scatter and such without making new copies of the brush... and smudge with an animated brush... that would be cool.

I'm in the final stages of having my animated path stroking script ready to go.  It's the intense thing I've ever done with GIMP and I'm stoked!!  I won't give any specifics at the moment (keep you begging for more!), but I really think you'll like it.  Here's a simple animated mask image I made in less than 5 minutes.  No GAP, just my script and saulgoode's combine background script.

Because of the number of features within the script, I'll probably have to do a tutorial on how it works, but operating the script is really easy.  Just gotta finish checking for errors and tweaking the code to make sure it functions as it's supposed to.

WOOT!

Here's another Tinkerbell (took about 45 minutes)....

EDIT:  I said I wasn't gonna do anymore Tinkerbell....I lied.  Threw this together (about 45 minutes)....
