Parchment Experment
« on: July 06, 2010, 11:30:57 AM »
I have been cruzing the net looking at parchment creation tutorials. I found a couple that were for gimp but the outcome was not what i thought it would be.  Not that they were bad but they did not look realistic. I have looked at a handful of PS tutorials and found one or two that had a good outcome but they relied a lot on brushes. I have nothing against using brushes but I was looking for some thing that you could make with just Gimp no need for extras.

I finally started to experiment on my own using the input from the tutorials and my own know how of Gimp. Below are two examples and i would like some feedback on them.

Experiment 01 - 1275 x 1650 - Parchment or possibly a stone texture.

Experiment 02 - 1024 x 768 - wrinkled parchment

Even thought they may look similar the process for creating them was different.

The first experiment i added a few splatters to try and achieve a stained look. Aside from that the rest was all achieved using filters and layer modes. The second experiment I added in some wrinkling to add to the over all look and feel. The rest of the texture was done with filters and layer modes.

Ok two more quick tests. I do believe i am getting the texture close to a parchment look. Interestingly enough i also figured out how to make a very cool looking stone texture.

Example 3

Example 4

ok here's my initial thoughts for you.

Example 1 looks more like stone and a great stone texture at that. Perhaps its the colours that make it look so.
Example 2 Remember Return of the Jedi? This looks rather similar to the Rebel's camo on Endor and the wrinkles really bring out the thick fabric feeling.
Example 3 This is the parchment. I would love to see this one but with a white layer on top set to a low opacity to kind of mute the colours a bit.
Example 4 This looks like a great compliment stone texture to Example 1. I would have no problem using this and Example 1 as stone textures in a map on Half-Life 2 Deathmatch.

Great work and I think its great to see the variations.

for the most part i agree with darth.  i think the first one is so good as stone.  i actually feel they are all better as stone.  i think less depth is the way to go.  they are a bit too rough IMO.

Thank you both for your input.
Back to the drafting board but at least this time with a better idea of what i am doing. I tried to goggle a picture of real parchment and you would be shocked how hard it is to find a decent example of real parchment.

Made with Example 5and this is almost exactly what I saw in my mind's eye when I first saw the texture. Awesome work man.

Thanks man. Number 5 i am the most pleased with. It seems to be closer to real life parchment that the others.

I guess i could write two tutrorials one for the parchment and one for the stone, but which stone?

Number 5 came out nice. I'd say example 1 for stone though.
Formerly sponge!
