one option I use often is Layers > New from visible

This comes in handy when doing gradient maps as well. I would highly suggest a better quality stock as well. The one you have there looks fuzzy and the tonal depth looks rather shallow. This will have an impact on the outcome of this tutorial.

Stretch a bit and try out Colours > Curves  or Colours > Levels

one other thing.  this new sig would be too big for challenges.  max size is 400x180
