I just noticed that the sand thing kinda reminded me of water.  If there were some way to sort of smooth it out, and, of course, change the color, I think you would get a nice "water ripple" effect.

Gotcha!  I modified the code which allows the user to let the script keep in the emboss effect (gives it the "grain") or not use it at all.  The script will also allow the user to either let add the noise automatically or do it manually for each of the 3 layers.  Does this like what you were after?

I'd rate you as an upper-middle-lower-mod with pro-novice-inter tendencies.....and a twist of lime!  Of course, my rating scale is completely objectively subjective, but ALWAYS consistently inconsistent.

Kind of...but its sort of fuzzy, almost like rippling fog or smoke, rather than water.  I am wondering if you couldn't do the emboss, then maybe do a selective gaussian blur to remove the smaller "lumps" from the emboss.  Might not work though.

Yeah, it is quite blurry.  I tried the "selected Gaussian", but I couldn't come up with any better there.  I ran the script several times experimenting with the settings and the only thing I could come up with a little closer is this  (at least giving it the appearance of "caustics") - still not shiny or anything though.

Don't know if you saw that I posted the script (http://www.gimpdome.com/index.php?topic=6761.msg43779;topicseen#msg43779), but if you want to experiment with the settings I used to get the above image, I set the Upper Blend Mode to Overlay, Middle Blend Mode to Softlight, Didn't add noise interactively, nor add the emboss effect, used a blue color and set the Blend Mode of the Color Layer to difference.  Maybe you could run it and then try to tweak one of the layers using the GIMP tools and getting it closer to your liking.  If you can figure out a way, maybe I can implement it.

I'll take a crack at it.  In the meantime, I like that last one.  Very otherworldly, like you're on Twilight Zone, traveling through Dimension X or something.

Well, make sure you show me anything cool you come up with (and let me know what settings you used)....

Is this any better?

I was able to use the Selective Gaussian blur and found a setting that still retained detail without adding too much blur.  The Van Gogh plugin actually gave the best results (finally found a use for that thing!  ), but I could only get it to work in the script by running it interactively.  Who wants to sit there through 30 frames hitting the "ok" button?

Added a new twist:

Results came from this tutorial: http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/melted-wax-chocolate-brains-zombie-guts-mega-tutorial-t36862.html-st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I'm gonna script the whole thing!

Didn't have anything to do this afternoon so I went back to the drawing board and got some really cool veins for my animated guts:
