Creating an Eye Texture
« on: November 23, 2007, 11:55:25 AM »
OK class today we are going to create an Eye Texture. You can right click and view image to see the full size preview of any of the preview images.

Step One: Create a new document 250pix X 250pix. Choose the color for your eye. For this tutorial i decided to make a fantasy eye and do reddish. Choose red or a lighter color red for your foreground color ( mine #ff0000) and a dark red for your background color (mine #9d0000).

Step Two: Fill your background layer with a linear gradient. Stroke left to right so your light color is on the left and your dark color is on the right. Than create a new layer name it dark wind.

Step Three: Select the Rectangle selection tool (R) and make a selection from the left side out to about 40pix right.

Step Four: Fill the selection with a Darker color I choose #6f0000.
Now select Filters>Distort>Wind. You may follow the settings below but it is very open to adjustments.

Wind Settings
Style: Wind
Direction: Left
Edge Affected: Leading
Threshold: 1

Threshold: 1
Click OK

Press shift+ctrl+F (Filters>Re-show "Wind")

Select your Rectangle Selection Tool (R) and make a rectangle selection from top to bottom 20pix wide. Fill this selection with your foreground color. Than Deselect (shift+ctrl+A  or Selection>None).

Step Six: Select Filter>Distorts>Wind

Step Seven: Select Filter>Blur>Motion Blur

Step Eight: create a new layer. Turn the visibility off on the background layer by clicking eye in the layer dialog. Now select Edit>Copy Visible than select the layer you just created by clicking on it. Select Edit>Paste Into than click the anchor icon to anchor the layer.

Step Nine: Select your Flip tool (Shift+F) and click the new layer flipping it horizontally. Turn the visibility of the background layer back on.

Step Ten: Create a new layer. Create a new vertical guide at 80 pix. Select your rectangle selection tool (R) and create a rectangle selection about 5 - 10 pixels wide. Change your foreground color to a lighter color  (mine #ff9696). Select your bucket fill tool (Shift+B) and fill the selection with the lighter color.

Step Twelve: Create a new layer. Select your Rectangle Selection tool (R). Make a rectangle selection from top to bottom on the right side at about 220pix and drag to the right. Select you Bucket Fill Tool (Shift+B) than fill  the selected area with black. Create a new rectangle selection from top to bottom at about 15px and drag left. Fill this selected area with white.

Step Thirteen: Select Edit> Copy Visible than select Edit>Paste As New Image. Select the new image and select your Rotate Tool (Shift+R) and click the image. Rotate the image by -90 degrees.

Step Fourteen: Select Filters>Distorts>Polar Coordinates
Polar Coordinates Settings

Circle Depth %: 100
Offset angle: 359.0 (really doesn't matter what you set this to.)
Check:  Map from top & To Polar (you can check Map Backwards it does not matter.)
Click OK

Finish it off by creating a new layer and filling it with white than lower the layer under you main eye texture.

From this point you can tweak the texture however you want. You can use a Larger round brush and make the pupil larger. Add lighting. Get creative and have fun.

That is pretty much it class. Feel free to post out comes, questions, comments or criticisms (constructive only).

Come on, do it.  Everyone else is.  You wanna be cool, don't you?  ::)
I'd rate you as an upper-middle-lower-mod with pro-novice-inter tendencies.....and a twist of lime!  Of course, my rating scale is completely objectively subjective, but ALWAYS consistently inconsistent.
