Animated Smudge Tentacles
« on: July 22, 2006, 02:37:33 PM »
My very first tut

this is my first outcome:

(this is an application of droz's art of stroking - smudge style)

Make a black image with a size of 150x400

create a new layer above the black, make a supernova (Filters|Light Effects|Supernova)

make it a bit bigger than 20 in radius, click OK

merge the nova layer with background layer

make about 5-7 different paths using the original tut's methods (making sure that they each eventually end up somewhere off of the canvas)

go to the paths dialog, make sure that all paths are visible then right click and click merge visible paths

select your smudge tool and make it the faded 5x5 pixel brush and set the rate to a generally middle number (45-65)

make sure your merged paths are visible and take out the pen tool and take your cursor very close to a visible path until it become a hand then click

duplicate the layer via the button at the bottom of the layers dialog (not the right click one(it's too slow to do that))

the new layer should be selected (shown by a white border in the dialog instead of a black one)

with the pen tool selected, click stroke path, then select "Stroke With A Paint Tool" and then the smudge tool in drop-down menu there, click stroke

repeat the blue steps until you have about 30 layers, then increase the smudge tool's rate by 15

(with the pen tool selected make sure your to reselect your paths clicking on one with the hand cursor)repeat the blue
 steps 10-12 times

then increase the smudge tool's rate by 5

repeat the green steps until you have stroked 10-12 with smudge tool set to 100

you should have about 90-134 layers depending on what your starting smudge rate was

convert the image mode to indexed (Image|Mode|Indexed) and make sure it is set to optimized color palette (first indexed color option) and raise the colors to 256 (should be 1 more than the default) click ok (may take a while for color indexing (part 3))

save as a .gif with whatever filename you want

when the info box comes up:
Save as Animation
Make sure the "Loop Forever" box is checked and that frame speed is 150 milliseconds and that the frame disposal is "One frame per layer(replace)" and press ok

there ya go (if you post this on another site just please link it here to expand the GIMPdome community)

C+C+F(as you wish)

I don't care what your thoughts are if they are reasonable i may update the tutorial accordingly
I'm just sharing the little amount of knowledge i have with this community
