Cool!  Glad you were able to take it for a test drive.  Looks pretty good....maybe you didn't do anything wrong with the cube. Could it be that your cylinder is a gymnist performing on the 'low beam?'  ::)  Anyway, here's what you did wrong with the cube and it's easy to fix:

You need to go back and adjust the settings like so:

Make sure your X and Y size are both set to 7 or some other larger number to make it look like a platform.  Also, you might want to drag the cube down so that it's at the base of the cylinder.  To do that, click on the move tool (It's in the upper left-hand corner of the button bar and looks like a 4-headed arrow over top of a sphere), go to your Front View window and while holding down the Shift key, click and drag the cube down.  The Shift key constrains the movement to one direction at a time.

Thanks for trying the tutorial.  Isn't 3d fun?!

I've got a couple more tutorials that I'm working on that I'll post soon.
I'd rate you as an upper-middle-lower-mod with pro-novice-inter tendencies.....and a twist of lime!  Of course, my rating scale is completely objectively subjective, but ALWAYS consistently inconsistent.

hmm, mine came out all fuzzy.  I tried messing with the settings, but I'm not sure what i did wrong. The colors are also washed out (ie the block it sits on is supposed to be brown).  The timing is also off (it's slow), but that can be changed in gimp.

2 things: Do you remember what your render settings were that you used? Can you upload the aoi file and let me take a look?  I might be able to offer some suggestions if you can do that...

I got your file (didn't realize you posted it)...I just saw your screenshot earlier and happened to check back by and saw the file there.....

It's a simple fix....your lights each have a radius of 5, which causes them to intersect with the objects.  I read somewhere that if your lights intersect with the objects, strange things will happen....well this must be what 'strange' is!

I went in and changed the light properties for each to have an Intensity of 1.5, Decay Rate 0.25 (You can lower that if you want.), and a Radius of 1.0.

Just a question, do you have the render preview window plugin?  That allows you to see a snapshot of what your render will look like so you can tweak things before doing a final render.  If not, go to Tools Menu > Scripts and Plugins Manager and choose the Install Tab.  The Scripts and Plugins Manager will automatically go to the Repository and tell you what's available.  Download any/all that appear interesting, but for this exercise, choose Preview Plugin....which is under the Plugins folder of the Install Tab.  Select it and then tell the Plugin Manager to Install it.  Close the Plugin Manager and restart AoI.  On the next start, you should have a little preview window on the right side of the screen.  When you want to see a preview, hit Settings > Renderer in the Preview Window area and experiment with the various render settings.  Then, hit the preview button and a preview will be produced.  It's a nice feature and will keep you from getting some 'surprises'.

I changed my settings to match yours, and my cylinder still looks "fuzzy."
Also, I can not install the Render Preview plug-in.  When I click on it in the list, the install button stays grayed out.

I see what you mean.  I deleted mine and tried to do a reinstall and came across the same situation.  Try this:

Go to the actual Scripts/Plugins Preview here: http://aoisp.sourceforge.net/AoIRepository/Plugins/PreviewPlugin/ and right-click the file named PreviewPlugin-2 3.jar and choose Save Link As....

Put the jar file in this folder: C:\Program Files\ArtOfIllusion\Plugins

Restart AoI and see if it's there now.

As far as the fuzziness, try setting your cloudiness parameter to 0 and lower your roughness a bit.  I suspect it might be the cloudiness, but not sure.

Thanks so much for all your help!  I got the plug-in installed, yay!  What a useful feature!
I also figured out my "fuzzy" problem.  It was my camera settings.  I changed them to: field of view 30, depth of field 40, and focal distance 10.  My cylinder looks pretty sharp now (haha, I'm punny).  It's rendering, and I will post results when it's finished and I get it animated.
Thanks again, Fence!

Yeah!  Glad you got it figured out.  Can't wait to see the results.
